Oxford East Liberal Democrats parliamentary spokesman, Dr Steve Goddard, welcomed the announcement on building a new, environmentally sustainable economy from the Liberal Democrats yesterday. Under the Lib Dem plans, 57,000 jobs would be created building off-shore wind turbines in the UK and investing in environmental research and technology.

Steve said "This is a great policy. We know people are struggling with the recession and lack of jobs. We know that climate change is a real and serious threat. We know that the British economy desperately needs a stimulus. Investing in a sustainable future will bring new jobs and create new sources of energy, allowing us to massively cut carbon emissions. Britain can become a world leader in green energy and environmental technology is we go down this path."

"We desperately need to broaden the base of our economy from financial services. This kind of high tech research, development and manufacturing will completely change the nature of Britain, reinvigorating areas that have been suffering since the 1980s from both Conservative and Labour government policy. I am delighted these plans are to be at the centre of our campaigning across the country."
