"Student Loans Company bonuses of £2M a disgrace" - Dr Steve Goddard
9.20.00am GMT Tue 17th Nov 2009
University lecturer and Oxford East Liberal Democrat parliamentary spokesman, Dr Steve Goddard has branded the £2m bonus payout for the Student Loans Company a disgrace. Figures revealed by the Lib Dems after a Freedom of Information request showed that bonuses totalling almost £2m have been paid out to staff, despite over 100,000 students being left without their loans this autumn.
Dr Steve Goddard said "This is completely unacceptable. I have had students contacting me for months, panicked about their finances. Some haven't been able to afford to eat. How on earth can they justify paying these bonuses? There are still students waiting for their loans even now, several months after the beginning of their studies. This is a total disgrace."
Liberal Democrat Shadow Universities Secretary, Stephen Williams, who will be visiting Oxford next week, said:
"It is absolutely outrageous that the Student Loans Company, which has acted so incompetently this year, has been paying out these massive bonuses.
"While students have been left struggling to make ends meet, the company's top executives have been enjoying five figure bonuses.
"Some of these pay-outs are more than many people earn in a year. Rewarding failure in this way is totally unacceptable."
