Dr Steve Goddard backs "Funding Our Future" Campaign
4.05.00pm GMT Wed 11th Nov 2009
Dr Steve Goddard, prospective Liberal Democrat MP for Oxford East and a lecturer at Oxford University , has today endorsed the NUS's Funding Our Future campaign and reiterated his pledge to pursue the abolition of fees. Steve says "The Liberal Democrats are still the only party who want to abolish tuition fees, as we did when we were in Government in Scotland . If I am elected the abolition of tuition fees will be one of my top priorities. We simply can not afford to weigh down our young people with this level of debt."
When fees were introduced every single Liberal Democrat MP - including Evan Harris who represents Oxford West and Abingdon - voted against their introduction. Locally, Steve Goddard campaigned against fees and in the General Election that followed cut the majority of the sitting Labour MP - a supporter of fees - to under a thousand.
Commenting further, Steve said "I see in my work as a lecturer how hard it is for students to get by. In this economic climate why on earth are we burdening our young people with debts of up to £35,000?"
