Steve Goddard was unanimously adopted as Liberal Democrat candidate to take on Andrew Smith at a packed meeting in the Asian Community Centre last night.
Almost 50 party members attended the meeting, at which Steve Goddard was introduced by Lord Goodhart, the Lib Dem Peer and top human rights lawyer, who has been leading opposition in the Lords to Labour's attacks on civil liberties.
Dr Evan Harris, standing for re-election as MP for Oxford West and Abingdon, was also there to back Steve Goddard. He said 'I have worked with Steve campaigning for the people of Oxford for well over a decade. He will be a first-rate constituency MP and a real asset to the Liberal Democrat team in the Commons.'
Steve Goddard added 'I'm delighted to have been formally adopted as Lib Dem candidate for Oxford East. I've never known the morale of party members to be higher, and if the reaction we've had from ordinary voters on the doorstep so far in this campaign is any guide, Andrew Smith is in serious trouble.'
